Walk through any Dubai apartment building and you will see both: sturdy deadbolts on some doors and simple knob locks on others. They look similar from the hallway, but they offer very different levels of protection. Choosing wrong leaves your front door weaker than it should be.
This guide compares deadbolts and knob locks on strength, cost and sensible use, so you can check your own doors with informed eyes. Golden Finger Key Cutting supplies and fits both types from our shop on D90 Street in Al Satwa, open daily 24 hours a day.
How a deadbolt works
A deadbolt extends a solid metal bolt deep into the door frame when you turn the key or thumb-turn. It does not spring back on its own, so it cannot be slipped with a card or forced by pushing the door. The bolt's throw length and the strength of the strike plate decide how much force the door can take. For entrance doors, this is the lock that security professionals recommend.
How a knob lock works
A knob lock holds the door with a spring-loaded latch that retracts when the knob turns. That spring is the weakness: the latch can be slipped with a thin tool, and the knob mechanism itself offers little resistance to force. Knob locks are fine for privacy on bedroom and bathroom doors, where convenience matters more than security. They were never designed to be a home's main defence.
Head-to-head comparison
On strength, the deadbolt wins clearly; a knob lock alone on a front door is a weak point no matter how good the door is. On cost, knob locks are cheaper to buy and fit, which is why developers use them everywhere. On convenience they are about equal for daily use, though a deadbolt needs a deliberate turn to lock. The sensible setup, and the one most security advice converges on, is both: a knob or lever for the latch plus a deadbolt above it on every entrance door.
What to do about your doors
Check your front door today. If it has only a knob lock, adding a deadbolt is the highest-value security upgrade a Dubai flat can get, and fitting takes under an hour. If you already have a deadbolt, make sure the strike plate is fixed with long screws into the frame, not just the trim. Visit our shop at Shop 267, D90 Street, Al Satwa, or call +971 56 167 7909, and we will assess your door and quote the upgrade plainly.
